Refinery 29's Katie Hintz-Zambrano writes, "Today marks the highly anticipated opening of Freemans Sporting Club and Barbershop, a much loved New York import now located at the corner of Valencia and 18th Street. We got a look at the space over the weekend, and boy is she a beauty! All decked out in warm woodsy tones, the open, vintage-inspired space features a row of five antique barber chairs, an old-fashioned shoe-shining station, a large waiting area with an oval-shaped, custom-made bench, and a shop-in-shop that will feature the natty clothing and accessories of the much-obsessed F.S.C. label (ie: dudes rejoice!). To find out more about Freemans' move out West, we caught up with Half Moon Bay native (but N.Y.C. resident) Sam Buffa, who runs the barbershop with his brother Jonah, who just happens to live across the street. '...All the decor is antique except for the waiting bench, which we had made. The whole back bar of the barbershop and all of its fixtures were made in 1893 for the World’s Fair in Chicago. It’s all mahogany and has a Victorian feel and it won the gold medal for hand-carving!'" $40 for a haircut and walk-ins only. Rejoice!

Yes, Toad Houses really do work! These are from PoFu. She writes, "A single toad can eat about 110 beetles, ants, June bugs, grasshoppers, slugs, moths, sowbugs, armyworms and other bugs every day. That's around 3,300 every month! Toads are most active at night, so during the day they need a fairly dark, cool place to hide from the sun and predators. Encourage these bug-hungry hunters to have a nice long stay in your garden by providing these adorable toad houses. Place in a moist, shady area in your garden and before long you'll have a new neighbor."

Novotny Cabin, Decatur Island, Washington

The principal architects of Miller/Hull are native Northwesterners, and their designs echo regional cues. “They view the region’s modest utilitarian structures – the lumber mills, fishnet-drying sheds and forest-fire watchtowers – with a modernist’s love of structural clarity, taut skins and industrial materials,” says Sheri Olson, an architect who also writes for the Seattle Times. The Novotny Cabin was built two decades ago and from some angles can seem a very 1990s version of a cabin, while from others it appears perfectly timeless. From the water its distinctive, peaked roof looks decidedly Salem, Mass., circa 1600, and as a result locals have nicknamed the house, “The Witch’s Hat.”

The 840-square-foot structure is located in the San Juan Islands on Decatur Island, and is shared by two couples who alternate their visits there. Decatur Northwest, the development where the house is located, is a collection of several dozen architectural gems, with no house exactly alike. The entire 600-acre community is also owned in common; you buy in as a member, and share all of the land, which has been preserved in its wild state. Landscaping is strictly verboten, save in a tiny perimeter around each home. As is the case with much of the San Juans there’s good hiking, fantastic kayaking, fishing, and even singletrack on Decatur, although to visit the part of the island where the architecture is as compelling as the nature you’ll need an invitation, as Decatur Northwest is strictly private. Framing Family Mementos
Displaying meaningful family letters around your home is a wonderful way to not only honor your family's legacy, but add interest and original art to a room. The letters will serve as a constant reminder of family, and will likely become conversation pieces among house guests. When displaying fragile paperwork, it's important to be cautious so the letter is properly preserved and protected.

To frame a double-sided letter, be sure to select a frame with 100% filtered glass on either side, which will protect the paper and color. Frame the letter with buffered matting to keep the paper from sticking to the sides of the glass. Choose a weathered looking mat if you're going for a vintage look, or a classic, inexpensive linen mat to add texture.

Add Accents that Represent Your Heritage
Another way to incorporate your family history into home design is to invest in decor that is tied to your family's heritage. For example, if you're Greek, consider adding a set of klismos chairs (seats with a concave top rail and in-curved saber legs) to the corner of a room in your home. You could also incorporate a Greek key pattern as a fabric trim on pillows or throws, or create a Greek Key stencil on a piece of furniture, or as a decorative tile border.

Coolhunting reports that Dutch designer Dirk van der Kooij is obsessed with rapid prototyping. Best known for his Endless Chair, made from a continuous string of recycled plastic using a 3D printer, the design has grown into a range of products all with the goal of making the production process more visible. Made from recycled refrigerators, the chairs are indeed made up out of one material. So no screws, demounting of parts, etc. So at the end of its life, the only thing that is left is this material, which can easily be shredded again until the plastic is at the end of its life. In fact, we shred the prototypes we don't like and use the material to make new ones.

Congratulations to my neighbor, Reed Danziger. In her seventh solo exhibition at Hosfelt Gallery, Reed Danziger presents new paintings on panel, a transition from her last show of large-scale works on paper. Danziger began to develop the color palette for this most recent work while at the Ucross artist residency program in Wyoming. The forms reflect not only the light and colors of that environment, but also the vast, undulating geography of the northern High Plains.In this body of work, Danziger's dense visual vocabulary takes shape in angular ribbons of colorful stripes colliding with one another, counter-balanced by more delicate, ethereal circles and matrices. Unfurling across the surface, these elements rise, bend, burst and twist. Danziger's interest lies in the examination of the evolution of these uninhibited natural patterns. "Everything is connected and yet undefined. It is hard to see what is influencing what and at what times," says Danziger. "And yet there is an intrinsic need for the elements to coalesce."

Taika Hand-Made Grizzly Bike

“The Grizzly” bike is the first product released by new Australian design company Taika. The prototype went through a battery of tests that only an active two-year-old boy can subject to a product. It has been ridden through an apartment, into the garden, along the footpath, across the promenade at the beach, down the pedestrian ramps, in between heavy foot traffic on nearby streets and over again and again every weekend for more than 12 months. The bike has been handmade by good people who care about the products they make. It hasn’t been made on a production line. It hasn’t been made by heavy machinery. As such, you may come across some love marks. They are signs that we are human, after all. The first one is painted with chalkboard paint, giving many possibilities to the budding bike designer.

I admire the simpleness and commitment of this project by Allister Lee. Inspired by a Guinness Book of World Records entry for the largest collection of cigarette rolling papers, Toronto-based artist Allister Lee of Studio B.I.B decided it was time to set a goal for himself and started collecting black markers. To "mark" the 500th acquisition in this graffiti-culture obsession, and midpoint to his overall goal (and hopefully Guinness record!), he's released a hand-drawn print that shows the complete historical and international spectrum of the 500 pens in his collection to date.

I am a believer that less is more. Over-accessorizing can take away from the calming nature of a room and become distracting.

There should always be a good source of music to set the mood and create relaxation.

Throws
I'm a big believer in having a throw in every room to wrap yourself in--preferably while enjoying that good cup of coffee or tea.

A view
Orient your space to the best view. If you don't have a view, create one with original art or photography of the things you love.

Light and candles
Always maximize natural light. Ambient light can also effectively create a mood, if done with thought. And don't forget the candles.

I love flowing panels. When the windows are open, the breeze creates a rippling that is not unlike the water.
